BOOK COVER DESIGN
The challenge in designing book covers is to attract attention and hold it long enough for the title and author to be read. Its not absolutely necessary that the title be the attracting element. A striking illustration or effective abstract pattern may be used to catch the eye, while the title itself may be quite small. In such cases, the design must be sufficiently intriguing to lure the shopper close enough to read the title. The competition for attention in bookstores today is huge. Not simply because the number of titles published is enormous, but because the proportion of effective design on book covers is increasing. Hence, the quality of publishers’ output is constantly under pressure to improve. —Marshall Lee
